Uzbekistan: Briefing for visit of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is visiting Uzbekistan on 13-15 March 2023. Prior to his visit, Association for Human Rights in Central Asia (AHRCA) and International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR) prepared a written briefing on key concerns regarding the human rights situation in Uzbekistan, which they have urged the Commissioner to raise with the Uzbekistani authorities. The briefing covers concerns regarding the referendum on constitutional amendments scheduled for 30 April 2023, serious violations related to the 2022 events in Karakalpakstan, harassment of journalists and bloggers, restrictions to access to internet resources, violations of the freedoms of peaceful association and assembly, torture and ill-treatment, criminalisation of homosexuality and persecution of LGBTI.
