“Srebrenica. When We, the Killed, Rise”: Drawing Lessons from the Past through Theatre Imagination

On Friday, 16 December IPHR and the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia held a public screening of a theatre play “Srebrenica. When We, the Killed, Rise”. Through artistic intervention, the play exposes mechanisms that first enabled and then denied the crime of genocide. It was, and still remains, the first theater performance in Serbia that focuses on this most important issue for society in Serbia today, the recognition of the genocide in Srebrenica.

The event presented an opportunity for European public and EU stakeholders to reach engage into discussions about human rights, civic responsibility, solidarity, lessons from the past, and shared European past and future.

Together with partners, we also organised a masterclass for young artists with the theatre play director Zlatko Paković – one of the most prominent theatre play directors in Serbia. The masterclass aimed to bring together young artists from Serbia and Belgium who seek intercultural exchange and wish to use art for building and promoting a culture of peace, humanism, and to oppose misusing culture for political purposes.

The event was organised in the framework of a joint project “Srebrenica: Drawing Lessons from the Past through Theatre Imagination”, supported by the European Union under the Programme “Europe for Citizens”.
More information on the project can be found here.
