Meet your defender: Zohrab Ismayil on unwritten rules, power of the civil society and the purpose of his work

Meet Zohrab Ismayil, civil activist and human rights defender from Azerbaijan. Zohrab’s path to civic activism began from journalism. As a journalist, he focused on economic issues, the management of natural resources and corruption. He soon realized that civil society action was a powerful way to change government policy in Azerbaijan. However, as the crackdown on human rights in the country got worse he had to leave the country in order to continue campaigning for democracy and transparency in Azerbaijan.
