Key human rights concerns in Tajikistan: Briefing papers for EU-Tajikistan Human Rights Dialogue

On the occasion of the EU-Tajikistan Human Rights Dialogue taking place today International Partnership for Human Rights issues two briefings of concerns about ongoing human rights abuses in the country.

The first briefing paper was prepared jointly by the NGO Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan and IPHR and focuses on key concerns in the areas of criminal justice and the penitentiary system, torture and ill-treatment, and human rights violations in the armed forces.

The second briefing paper focuses on key concerns in the areas of freedoms of expression, assembly and association.

Weaknesses in Tajikistan’s protection of human rights have been felt particularly keenly during the COVID-19 pandemic and both briefings highlight relevant key concerns in different thematic chapters.

The documents conclude with a set of key recommendations that the authors of these briefings urge the European Union to raise with the Tajikistani authorities.
